Edizione: a core trilogy of dumas historical novels focusing on the turbulent, late 16th-century reigns of the final valois monarchs in france. dumas blends political intrigue and religious war with romance to produce the high-adventure for which he is so well known and loved.
the first book is set in 1572 covers the marriage of marguerite de valois (margot) to henri de navarre and the surrounding st. bartholomew's day massacre. the second story follows the reign of henri iii, the scheming of catherine de médicis, and the love story of the count de bussy. forty-five guardsmen concludes the series, focusing on the continued instability of france under henri iii from 1585–1586.
all three stories are greatly enhanced by the inclusion of frank t. merrill's vivid illustrations.
