Poi, nel 1985 il regista francese Claude Lanzmann concluse la lavorazione, protrattasi per dodici anni, della sua opera principale, intitolandola con uno dei termini ebraici per designare il genocidio: Shoah. A partire da quel momento, il vocabolo entrò nel lessico comune. Il film è un lavoro straordinario per durata e complessità. Attraverso la testimonianza di decine di individui, scelti tra quelli più vicini ai siti dello sterminio, Lanzmann offre una polifonia radicata nei luoghi del genocidio, ormai vuoti e muti.
