Come hanno osservato, concettualizzato, rappresentato le culture, i costumi, le forme di organizzazione sociale e politica percepiti come diversi da quelli del Vecchio Mondo? I casi di studio considerati dalle autrici e dagli autori del volume si basano sulle testimonianze di coloro che hanno percorso il globo per scopi di esplorazione scientifica o missione religiosa, per motivi commerciali o di amministrazione, <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">policy making</em>, filantropia in ambito coloniale. La loro analisi è accomunata dall’impiego di strumenti e tagli metodologici propri di una nuova storia culturale, attenta al dialogo con la storia del pensiero politico-economico, alla valorizzazione di fonti visive e aurali-performative, alla conoscenza di tradizioni storiografiche extraeuropee.
