Nel libro vengono ricostruiti i legami affettivi con la famiglia paterna, decisivi per la formazione della sua coscienza civile e della militanza partigiana, e gli incontri personali e ideali con i meridionalisti Tommaso Fiore e Gaetano Salvemini, con cui instaurò rapporti autentici come il sodalizio con Benedetto Croce, indiscusso maestro della sua generazione. Ma è con la Puglia e con Agropoli, cittadina della costa cilentana, luogo del suo confino politico (quest’ultimo rivisto in parallelo con quelli di Pavese e Levi), che il trasporto di Antonicelli per il Sud si fa ancora più intimo e commosso: una sorta di “appartenenza” a quella terra che si manifesterà con racconti, articoli, recensioni, lettere, versi.
