Eppure senza queste ottave non ci sarebbe Rugiero, il mitico fondatore di casa d’Este. Come nacque il personaggio? In che modo Boiardo e Ariosto lo inserirono nella linea dinastica estense? Per rispondere a queste domande, il volume ricostruisce le conoscenze genealogiche degli Este tra Quattro e Cinquecento ricorrendo anche a testi e documenti inediti, come l’albero genealogico realizzato dal domenicano Bartolomeo da Ferrara nel 1426. La figura di Rugiero rappresentò per i due poeti una difficile sfida, perché la sua presenza li costrinse a confrontarsi con il modello dell’epica virgiliana. Dopo la genealogia estense Boiardo cercò di trasformare l’<em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Inamoramento de Orlando </em>in un poema anche epico-dinastico. L’operazione non gli riuscì – e non poteva riuscirgli.
