Lo sviluppo dei nazionalismi, affermatosi a partire dall’inizio del secolo scorso, si è fondato sull’esaltazione del concetto di Stato-nazione e sul richiamo dell’identificazione nazionale per rafforzare l’omogeneità e il sentimento di appartenenza etnica nell’ambito dei confini nazionali e garantire un processo di differenziazione verso l’esterno. In Europa e nelle Americhe, sentimenti e movimenti nazionalisti e populisti si contrappongono ai processi di globalizzazione, all’azione delle istituzioni internazionali, al multiculturalismo e all’inclusione sociale, visti come minacce all’indipendenza, ai valori, al benessere e alla coesione sociale dei singoli Stati. Il volume, risultato di un progetto di ricerca pluriennale dedicato al “ritorno della nazione”, raccoglie i contributi di studiosi di differenti settori scientifico-disciplinari che hanno guardato al tema da una prospettiva storica, politica ed economica, così come sociologica, comunicativa e linguistica.
