Es ist die Aufgabe der Lexikografie, Neologismen zu beobachten, ihren Gebrauch festzuhalten und der interessierten Öffentlichkeit Antworten auf Fragen, die mit der Verwendung von neuen Wörtern, neuen Wortgruppen oder neuen Bedeutungen auftreten können, zu liefern. Dabei genügt es nicht, nur diese teilweise umfänglichen Informationen in allgemeinen Wörterbüchern wie dem <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Duden</em> festzuhalten. Für das Deutsche existieren vier Wörterbücher zu Neologismen, die seit 2004 erschienen sind. Es handelt sich um <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Neuer Wortschatz. Neologismen der 90er Jahre im Deutschen </em>(2004), <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Neuer Wortschatz. Neologismen im Deutschen 2001-2010</em> (2013), das <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Deutsche Neologismenwörterbuch </em>(2007) und das <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Online-Neologismenwörterbuch</em>.
