[Bonn, Academiae Caesareae Leopoldina, 1825]. 4to. 22 pp.; two finely engraved plates. Contemporary half calf with stippled gilt borders; gilt title on the spine; marbled endpapers. = A fine monograph by the German anatomist Friedrich Christian Rosenthal (1779-1829), who had a special interest in marine mammals, but, unfortunately, published little: "Ein größeres mit Hornschuh schon vor mehreren Jahren zusammen begonnenes Werk über die Robben und ein anderes über die Wale blieben infolge des frühen Todes Rosenthal’s unvollendet" (Julius Pagel in: Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie). Published in the society's Nova Acta XII(2). A peculiar small oval purple and gilt bookplate (monogram) on the front pastedown, some rubbing to the boards, but quite nicely bound. A very good copy.
