First Edition of this definitive work on the Scottish tartans. Very impressively illustrated with a chromolithograph colourplate frontispiece and seventy-one additional fine chromolithograph olourplates displaying each clan's Tartan. Each plate has a tissue guard and is accompanied by a leaf of descriptive text with chromolithographed armorial crest (some of which are highlihted with gold and silver), plus a double-page colour map of Scotland to rear, illustrating the districts occupied by the various clans. Large Folio (36 x 27 cm), very handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter dark blue morocco over marbled paper covered boards, the spine with raised bands and elabortely gilt decorated compartments, date and title in two compartments gilt, the original publisher's gray colour-decorated cloth, the front cover with the Royal Arms of the Stuart Dynasty emblazoned in gold, silver and several colors within a handsome gilt framework, and the spine panel lettered in gilt and with an elaborate thistle and shield motif decor stamped in gilt and red are bound in at the end, top edge gilt, decorative marbled endpapers to match. xix, [1], plates and text leaves, unpaginated The nicest copy we have seen, the binding very handsome indeed, strong and tight, the tipped in original gray cloth in fine and rarely found condition, the text still quite fresh and clean, a few isolated spots, an especially pleasing copy in a most handsome binding.
