The preceding first edition was anonymously printed in 1768 in an edition of only 50 copies on the author's own Strawberry Hill Press, in Twickenham south-west of London. This present drama by Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797), cousin of Lord Nelson and English man of letter, is an important work of literature that not only contributed to the development of Gothic literature but also challenged the moral and social norm of its time. - ESTCT 41679; Dibdin, Tour II, p. 619.
