The 2017 catalogue marks a change in approach. The contract for its design is no longer awarded annually; it is now granted to a designer or design team for three successive years. This allows the designers to reflect at length on the task at hand and sustain a long-term ambition. Teo Schifferli, whose work involves the idea of “the architecture of the book”, is the first to take on this new approach. The catalogue can been viewed as a list of characteristic elements drawn from each of the recognised books from 2017. As a result, the reader can watch the design process in action.
