413 pages. Index. Black and white photographic plates. Tolmie "came to the Oregon Country in 1833 and lived in the city of Victoria from 1859 until his death in 1886. He was one of that city's outstanding citizens, and served two terms in the provincial legislature. An ethnologist and a botanist, Dr. Tolmie did much original work on the flora and fauna of the Northwest and wrote widely on these subjects. As a trader with the Hudson's Bay Company he came into intimate contact with the Indian tribes and was a recognized authority on Indian affairs, as well as a student of the different languages and dialects used from Oregon to Alaska. In addition to his commercial duties, he practiced medicine, and in his later years he operated a large farm on Vancouver Island where he specialized in the breeding of cattle." - from page xii. Average wear. Binding taped at title page. A worthy reference copy. Book
