London, Van Voorst, 1857. 8vo (20.7 x 13.1 cm). 83 pp.; two lithographed plates of which one a hand-coloured geological map; 59 text engravings, showing fossils, etc., of which one partly coloured. Early 20th-century quarter morocco over grained boards. Gilt title on the spine. = A well-illustrated work, dealing principally with the Eocene London Clay, but also with Pleistocene deposits. Sir Joseph Prestwich (1812-1896) was a British geologist, specialized in the Tertiary of the London Basin. Pictorial bookplate of the Working Men's College on the front pastedown, and their library regulations on the front free endpaper recto, as well as a stamp on the title. repair to title page margin, otherwise good, clean, in a strong, but not inelegant binding. Very uncommon.
