White DJ a bit darkened. Slight toning to first and last few pages. Light foxing to fore edge. A handsome and tight copy. ; "Kumasi, the capital of Ahanti and in the hinterland of the Gold Coast is now a flourishing modern city, with Cathedral, churches, railway stations, schools and cinemas. In 1900 it was the scene of one of the most dramatic incidents in the history of the British Empire. The Ashantis, an unconquered and bloodthirsty race, who had for over two hundred years resisted all attempts at conquest or colonisation, besieged in Kumasi, 3,800 British subjects, inluding His Excellency Sir Frederick Hodgson, and Lady Hudgson. The attackers numbered some 40,000. Major W. M. Hall, the author of this book, was called upon to attempt, with a small force of native troops, the relief of Kumasi, having first to penetrate 141 miles inland along single file track through the densest jungle forest in Africa, with only native carriers for transport and communications constantly in danger from an actively hostile population. (.) " Kumasi is in the Ashanti Region of what is Ghana today. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xvi, 367 pages
