Early Issue. Illustrated with 74 finely produced beautiful colour plates from paintings and a folding map by Sutton Palmer, wonderfully reproduced and with captioned tissue guards. The frontispiece illustration of a cottage home is not bound into this copy. 8vo, publisher's lovely decorated sea-blue cloth, the upper cover gilt lettered within an all-over design of English grasses, flowers, vines and berries in green, maroon and gilt, the spine likewise decorated, t.e.g. xi, 252, 8 ads, pp. A very pleasing copy, the text is bright and clean with only the faintest hint of very occasional age mellowing or spotting, the binding fresh and attractive as well, superficial cracking to the endpaper along the inner front hinge, still a tight and clean copy.

Edizione: scarce in such well preserved condition. this is one of the best of the illustrated works published by a. & c. black. it contains a whooping 75 beautiful plates by sutton palmer. palmer was best known for his gold metal winning idyllic rustic landscapes painted in watercolours and moncrieff's tour of surrey provided him with many of his best views and settings.
