[vi], 360 pp.; six partly or completely chromolithographed plates or maps (all double-sized or larger) incuding two of the Aegean Sea and one fine plate of the "Spalten und Sandkrater in Achaja" (24 Jan. 1862). Contemporary pebbled half calf over linen boards. Spine with four gilt-lined raised bands and gilt title. Speckled edges. = Rare early contribution on earth quackes in Greece, much updated and expanded from the first edition, published in 1873. The author is the German geologist and astronomer Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt (1825-1884), best known for his research on the geology of the moon, and volcanism in Greece and Italy (mainly Mount Vesuvius). Do not confuse with his later (1881) Studien über Vulkane und Erdbeben. Old owner's signature on the title, rubbed at joints, top 9 mm of spine missing, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Not in Ward & Carozzi.
