2 volumes. First edition. With 20 fine wood-engraved and tissue-guarded plates after John Everett Millais. Tall 8vo, in the publisher's original green cloth, stamped 'Virtue and Co.' on the tails, the upper covers and spines with lovely gilt lettering, all over decoration in blind, endpapers a pale yellow. Now housed in a cloth-covered slipcase. vi, [1], 320; vi, [1], 328 pp. A very bright and handsome set of this work notoriously scarce in original cloth in acceptable condition. The textblock is remarkably fresh and clean with no spotting, a touch only, to the prelims and some tissue guards, the cloth exceptionally bright and attractive, some very expert restoration to the spines preserving the original decorated cloth entirely. A rare and elusive survival.
