Three long sequences of photographs show a desert landscape of dust and rock. The differences are imperceptible between one photo and the next. Only on closer inspection do we notice the minimal shifts in the frame. The small, square, Cartesian coordinate systems on the photos suggest an underlying scientific purpose. The photos are from the nASA Archive, shot by astronauts during the Apollo 15 and Apollo 16 lunar landing missions. Swiss artist Luciano Rigolini (b. 1950) uses photographic sequencing to create a metaphorical trip to the moon bearing little resemblance to the common imagery framing the moon landings as heroic accomplishments. By closely scrutinizing the appropriated images, Rigolini transforms the nASA photographs from documentary material into artworks that tap into mans eternal musings on the mythological and symbolic sides of the moon.
