ONE OF ONLY 15 COPIES ON CHINESE PAPER FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF THE FIRST FRENCH ADAPTATION of the classic Chinese novel "Jin Ping Mei" ("The Plum in the Golden Vase" or "The Golden Lotus". VIII, 295 pp. Illustrated with 14 full-page reproductions of Chinese woodcuts. One of 15 large-paper copies printed on fine Chinese paper (the rest of the edition was printed on wood-pulp paper.) An extremely odd association copy, with the (authentic) bookplate of French statesman Léon Gambetta (1838-1882), who had died thirty years before the book was published! 8vo. Bound in contemporary quarter cloth and marbled boards. Uncut. Original wraps preserved. Light wear to binding. A little internal spotting (as almost always with Chinese paper). Else fine and bright.
