First edition, 4to, vi, [2], 186pp., mezzotint frontispiece portrait of the author, 10 tinted plates, later half calf, marbled boards, spine bands ruled in gilt with blue morocco lettering piece to second compartment, a very good copy. The lectures were delivered by John Opie, who held the position of Professor in Painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. These lectures cover various aspects of painting, including design, invention, chiaroscuro, and colouring. The book also includes a memoir by Mrs. Amelia Opie, and provides an insight into John Opieís talents and character.
