Descrizione
E.O. Un volume (18 cm) di 358 pagine. Fioriture alle prime pagine. Mezza tela blu coeva. Chesneau, critico d'arte non conformista, descrive la scena artistica attorno al 1860, ed indica tra i suoi preferiti Courbet, Manet, Fantin Latour, Whistler. Chesneau, who was a friend and admirer of John Ruskin, was deeply concerned with the relationship between art and society. He believed that modern art should seek to truthfully depict contemporary life, and in this way admired the work of Gustave Courbet. Chesneau, who was one of the first to offer critical support to the work of Edouard Manet, in 1864 acquired a small painting by the artist. He also appeared as a champion of Whistler (Univ. Glasgow).
