"With great conscientiousness and method, the distinguished Turkology Rahmeti Arat, who happily continues in Turkey the tradition of his master [Willi Kaup] Bang, gives us a critical edition of the 'Kutadgu Bilig' which uses the three existing manuscripts, or more precisely their photographs. The precision of the transcription, the care brought to the critical apparatus, the excellent historical development continued in the introduction (pp. vii to lxvi) make this work a precious working tool for philologists, who await with impatience (and confidence) its completion by a commented translation and by a dictionary and an index. It is useless to emphasize the importance of this long poem of 6,645 couplets (11 + 11 syllables), which is with the 'Divan' by Kasgarî the most striking work of the 11th century Turkish, at least among those we know.
