Descrizione
London, for W. Wood, 1828. 8vo (22.1 x 14.0 cm). xxiii, 212, [ii] pp.; 38 hand-coloured engraved plates. Original green pebbled boards. Spine with printed paper label. = Written by the English bookdealer and zoologist William Wood (1774-1857) who was a staunch Linnaean, the Index Testaceologicus is renowned for its small yet accurate illustrations of more than two thousand species, including several described as new. This is a hand-coloured copy of the second "corrected and revised" edition (actually the third - the first appeared in 1818, with only eight plates, the second in 1825). A final edition appeared in 1856. In the rear is a two pp. catalogue of other natural history books published by Wood. Uncut. Light foxing to endpapers and title, otherwise excellent - pages and plates clean, images bright. Nissen ZBI, 4459.
