Edizione: an important book. this work went through several editions and was translated into french. the author eventually became a general and the governor of gibraltar but at the time that he wrote this book, he was a lieutenant colonel and serving under sir ralph abercromby. the book became popular because it recounted the cruelty of napoleon towards his prisoners at jaffa and his own soldiers in cairo. the emperor did complain to the british government about the work but nothing was done. in the end, he issued a counter report. wilson later protested corporal punishment in his own army.
