Roy. 8vo., First Edition, with coloured frontispiece, 155 monochrome plates on 100 and very numerous illustrations in the text, some faint offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; original terracotta cloth, backstrip lettered in black, a very good, bright, clean copy. Following the publication of 'English Church Screens' (1936) dealing with parish churches, Vallance began work on this equally comprehensive and scholarly sequel. The text was virtually complete when the author died (in July 1943) and the work was completed and brought to press by Edward T Long. The two works together remain the standard reference.
