Leipzig, Wilhelm Engelmann, 1883. Large 4to (32.8 x 27.1 cm). Title pages, [ii], 30 pp.; 15 fine, large, tinted lithographed plates (a few larger, double-folded), with explanatory text leaves. Original printed wrappers. = Important and rare monograph of brown algae of the Mediterranean Sea, with new taxa. Most plates show whole specimens, a few are cell-biological. Author is the Italian botanist, and staff member of the zoological station in Napels, barone Raffaello - or Raffaele - Valiante, about whom very little else is known. Written in Italian. The second title, therefore, reads Le Cystoceirae del Golfo di Napoli. Uncut. Wrappers foxed, edges chipped and with a few tears; spine cover lost, and binding broken. Several plates with foxing in the margins, otherwise a good copy. Quite rare. Neither in Nissen BBI, nor in Stafleu and Cowan.
