Leipzig, C. F. Winter, 1889-1892. Large 8vo (24.7 x 16.7 cm). vii, 462 pp., 17 lithographed plates (one partly coloured). Near contemporary buckram with gilt title on the spine. = A standard work on holothurians (sea cucumbers) by the German zoologist Hubert Ludwig (1852-1913), arguably the foremost authority on sea cucumbers of the late 19th to early 20th century. With fine engravings. This is a part of Bronn's famous zoological series Das Thier-Reich, but complete for the Holothuria. Bronn's series is prone to foxing - this copy, however, is quite clean. Old stamp on title, tippex number on spine and smudge on front board, otherwise very good.
