Descrizione
Ienae [Jena], Christoph Krebs, 1710. Two papers in one. Small 4to (19.8 x 15.9 cm). Title page, dedication on verso, [3]-40; [AND] second title (rear blank) [3]-12 pp. No covers published. Old spine cover of marbled paper. = A rarely seen thesis on a medical plant from eastern North America, now known as Aristolochia virginiana, or Virginia snakeroot. It is endangered in many states. "Among the Cherokee Indians, the root of this herb was chewed and spit upon wound to cure snake bites" (Wikipedia). The author, Christoph Ludwig Göckel (1689-1759) was a German medical doctor, botanist, and a friend of the famous German botanist Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769). The promotor was the German surgeon, botanist and chemist Georg Wolffgang Wedel (1645-1721). The second paper (dated six days after the first), which might be even rarer, refers to Wedel's works and researches, including his presidence over Göckel's inauguration. Edges slightly creased, otherwise very good.
