Descrizione
A FOLIO PROOF COPY ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER of this quirky and brutal livre d'artiste. Illustrated with etchings by Chessa after Merson (for the illustrations) and Cossard (for the manuscript text). From a total edition of 500 copies, this is ONE OF ONLY TEN COPIES PRINTED IN FOLIO FOR THE PUBLISHER, THE ONLY COPIES WITH THE PLATES PRIINTED BEFORE STEELFACING (aciérage). These ten copies were printed on different papers, and this copy is printed throughout on Imperial Japanese paper. (These ten copies are mentioned in the prospectus, but not in the justification, surely because they were never offered for sale.) LAID IN IS AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY MERSON, SIGNED IN INK. Folio. Loose as issued in original wraps. Wraps a bit worn and spotted, internally FINE AND BRIGHT, with the illustrations extremely sharp and in perfect condition. Perhaps the unique surviving unbound proof copy on Japanese paper. Ray 300 (Ray didn't know about the proof copies.)
