Despite its natural splendor, the Kashmiri people have endured historical oppression and conquest by various empires, including the Moguls, Afghans, and Sikhs. Consequently, they have suffered from a lack of self-respect and courage. The Kashmiris generally have fair complexions, and a significant number of them possess blue eyes and auburn hair. The majority of the population follows Islam, with a small Buddhist community and Brahmins, who are the highest Hindu caste. Historically, only the Brahmins have shown interest in education and attending schools.
