To a friend with thanks for understanding his obsession with annotating every book he reads, suggesting a possible trip to Geneva, but particularly hoping to see him in Assisi one day, a place where he considers one may benefit from friendships more than anywhere else: "Vous avez donc deviné ma manie d'annoter les livres que je lis. Je vous en remercie avec une simplicité et une reconnaissance émue. Ne viendrez-vous jamais à Assise? Peut-être pourrai-je vous saluer à Genève, mais ce ne sera pas la même chose. Ici on profite des amis plus qu'en aucun lois du monde [.]".
