De selectie wordt gepresenteerd als een denkbeeldige wandeling waarin alle interesses en passies van Leopold III aan bod komen. Meestal worden daarbij twee beelden met elkaar geconfronteerd, bv. een verre oever uit Maleisi tegenover een uit Congo, een jonge vrouw tegenover een hoogbejaarde. Met nog een aantal familiefoto's zit er niet echt een duidelijke eenheid in het boek, maar de kwaliteit van de foto's is hoogstaand. De eenvoudige zwart-wit- en kleurenfoto's getuigen van professionele toewijding en respect voor de gefotografeerde mensen. Dat respect, en zelfs bewondering, voor niet-westerse volkeren blijkt ook uit de enkele teksten van Leopold III die werden opgenomen. Elke foto wordt kort geannoteerd, soms is er iets meer uitleg. Je krijgt de indruk dat sommige foto's kunstmatig verscherpt zijn en dat de kleuren wat opgepept werden, maar dat stoort niet. Tal R works with a variety of techniques and media including painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, installation, print and furniture. Tal R is a keen observer, who takes inspiration from reality as well as his imagination. According to Tal R one can easily describe the subject of his works over the phone. In Home Alone Tal shows a series of birds in their cages and a series of still lifes. The titles of the works refer to the literary work of Bruno Schulz. In his Cinnamon Shops, a collection of interlinked stories, the most prosaic elements of everyday life become fantastic, full of mystery, capable of containing and at times revealing the deepest secrets of existence. Each story floats between the realism of his own autobiography and a fantastical fiction. In one of his stories Schulz tells about his father?s collection of a colony of birds in the attic, which served as an inspiration to Tal?s series of birds in their cage. Tal?s birds are delicately balanced between representation and abstraction, with abstract shapes and fields of color. The linings of the cage divide the canvas and provide structure to the stacking of different paint colors. In his series of still lifes, Tal depicts a series of objects that have been carefully arranged on a table top. These objects are as familiar as they are estranged. They are the objects that have been taken from their initial place and lost their name. Just like in Disney Pixar?s Toy Story, where the toys come to live as soon as the door closes, Tal gives these objects new life by painting or drawing them. Many of these objects carry references towards the stories of Schulz, but just like the author Tal?s interest is not so much in the story itself but in a proces of regeneration. However, they aren't amalgamations in which mass-media images are merely transformed into painting or the ?stories? are faded out, but rather the artist refers to collective ideas of medially transmitted patterns and models that he transfers into a new and likewise imagined ideal type. nIn the most recent group of works this brand of magical symbolism takes an astonishing turn. The film sets that are made up of scenery from different scenes are embellished with symbolic props. These pointed image-within-an image constellations interrupt the time-space continuum of the interiors after having been additionally charged with titles such as ?Gilda?, ?Rebecca? or ?Violet?. Christoph Steinmeyer counters the apparent authenticity of his filmic black and white painting with grisalle, which upon closer inspection reveals a fine and detailed chromaticism. This style of painting convulses the beautiful appearance of the compositions like peristalsis- as if we were dealing with dream sequences that can only occur in films or indeed in the way Christoph Steinmeyer shows them to us. It is indeed a rarity to find such fantastical potential in painting. nThe book complete with its unusual format is the first publication to date on Christoph Steinmeyer's work.
