Descrizione

With engr. head-vignette and 31 plates etched by Bernhard Rode. Title, 82 pp. 4to. Contemp. half calf. From the library of Maximilian de Beauharnais with his lithographed bookplate. Berlin, Akad. Kunst- und Buchhandlung, 1788. First edition. K. W. Ramler (1725-1798) was controversial during his lifetime. For this critical work he earned great praise. Rode's (1725-1797) most famous engravings include the masks of dying warriors by Andreas Schlüter in the courtyard of the Berlin Zeughaus. This copy comes from the collection of Maximilian Napoléon de Beauharnais (Munich 1817 St. Petersburg 1852), 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg. His maternal grandfather was Maximilian I, King of Bavaria. Maximilian de Beauharnais was married to Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaeva Romanova of Russia, oldest daughter of Tzar Alexander II. - VD 18 11572043; Goedeke IV/1, 50; Thieme/Becker XXVIII, 455.
