First edition, First Issue, the very scarce first state of the book with “Moses” opposite the engraved portrait of Twain. Profusely illustrated throughout by Brown, Williams, Day and others and with original illlustrations by Twain himself. Thick 8vo, publisher’s deluxe binding of full sheep, one of the four bindings available to subscribers, sometime rebacked to style with raised bands gilt ruled, with the original black lettering label gilt. xvi, 631, 1pp ads. A pleasing survival, the text block and binding very sturdy and sound and in excellent order, mellowing to the paper as usual, a bit of rubbing to the binding edges.
