Albumen carte-de-visite photograph (1860-1870) of the Scottish philosopher, historian and writer, considered one of the most important commentators of his time. Carlyle is depicted in a thoughtful expression, sitting on a chair with his right hand holding his head and his left shoulder covered with a cloak. Photographed in Joseph John Elliott (1835-1903) and Clarence Edmund Fry (1840-1897) studio, active in London with this name from 1863 until 1887. Marked on the back “Elliott & Fry”.
