Albumen carte-de-visite photograph (1860s) of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine (1837-1892) and his spouse Princess Alice of the United Kingdom (1843-1878). The Grand Dukes are depicted in full-figure : Princess Alice is depicted sitting at a desk reading, while Louis is leaning slightly towards the Princess as he gazes upon her. Photographed in the studio of John Jabez Edwin Mayall (1813-1901), the first photographer who published cartes-de-visite for the Royal family, active in London from 1852. Marked on the back “Mayall London”.
